CI Taft in California to Close January 31, 2020 UPDATED
October 02, 2019
As of October 31, 2019 this post has been updated to note that Taft will NOT be closing as initially reported. After the intervention of Congressman McCarthy, The Bureau of Prisons has elected to perform a feasibility study to determine what repairs would be required to keep the facility operational. The initial post reads as follows:
The Federal Bureau of Prisons announced on Tuesday October 1, 2019 that CI Taft (Kern County, CA) will close on January 31, 2020. CI Taft is operated by the Management and Training Corporation (MTC). MTC is the third largest private prison operator in the United States. The Bureau previously identified $100,000,000 dollars in necessary repairs to the 2000 person facility and has decided to close the federal prison rather than make those repairs. It is expected that federal inmates currently housed in Taft will begin being transferred shortly. Please feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns.
